About Loreto, Mexico
Loreto: A Hidden Gem Waiting to Be Discovered
Loreto lies 356 km north of the state capital, La Paz, in Baja California Sur. Framed by the Sierra La Giganta and the Sea of Cortez, it looks onto five islands within the Bay of Loreto National Park. Loreto is bordered to the north by the Municipality of Mulegé and to the south by the Municipality of Comondú. In 1993, Loreto became its own municipality.
Recognized as the historical capital of Upper and Baja California, Loreto’s colonial era began with the founding of the Mission of Our Lady of Loreto in 1697 by Jesuit Father Juan María de Salvatierra. The municipal seat is the city of Loreto; Nopoló and Loreto Bay form the principal residential and tourist area. Rural communities include San Javier, San Juan Londó, Liguí, Ensenada Blanca, Agua Verde, Paso Santa Cruz, El Peloteado, Tembabichi, San Nicolás, and others—each preserving striking landscapes, rich culture, and enduring traditions.
